WE remember as 2009 winds down to a close, the pages of daily newspapers constantly being invaded by endless reports of fellow citizens being grievously hurt by violent acts of crime. In addition, there was the endless flow of warning e-mail compounded by stories more terrifying than the next which, residents tell us, happen on the very street where we live.
Gasing Indah was no different from the many similar housing areas besieged by frequent snatch thieves, burglars, and violent assaults on its residents who lived in fear for the safety of their families and loved ones. The scenario gradually started to shift as frequent dialogue with the police begin to energise the residents’ commitment to take back the ownership of their own areas from the criminals.
This event came with the aggressive support of Supt Abdul Razak Elias who heads the Community Policing in the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Petaling Jaya. His tactful manners marked by his “walk the talk” encouragement produced strong incentives for the positive change of mind-set among the residents towards the police in their involvement to help reduce the crime rate. Through this integrated smart partnership with the police, our residents gradually begin to see a drastic reduction in the crime rate.
With the inception of our Skim Rondaan Sukarela (SRS), which began in March 2009, during a short span of several months, the SRS volunteers had become involved in six projects with the police and participated in other meetings to help gain a clearer picture in effective policing measures. As a result, when our Rukun Tetangga launched this scheme, it peaked to some 70 resident volunteers in Gasing Indah who became passionate in their stand against crime. Together, we can see this empowerment of the Safe City Initiatives (SCI) concepts becoming a reality in every segments of our multiracial society. The greatest legacy that every one of us can leave behind is the inspiration of community cooperation for others to do the same as well. Thus, it has also become our motivation to come together for a truly 1Malaysia Spirit.
Lastly, we are indeed grateful to these caring police officers who are bound by such innate sense of duty and dedication to serving the public with their exemplary work and genuine security assurance in bonding strong neighbourhood links in their crime prevention approach. As the year gradually comes to an end, the residents of Gasing Indah wish to express a huge thank-you to all our men and women in blue at IPD Petaling Jaya.
